Mapcreator: one brand, one vision

Company news November 5, 2019

We have some exciting news to share with you! Actually, we have lots of exciting stuff to tell you about over the coming months but, for now, let’s start with our new, err, old name. As you know, we are mad on, gaga about and positively crazy for maps. We can’t help it, mapping is in our DNA (they do ‘map’ genes after all, right?). Sorry. Okay. Our name.

Mapcreator is our company name. In fact, it’s the name we started with when we founded the company 12 years ago. Most of you will know and have worked with our Maps4News tool, which we have successfully built and developed in conjunction with our newsroom colleagues from around the world. A lot has changed since 2007 as we, and many of our customers, have grown and adapted our businesses and technologies to serve multiple markets. Just as you no longer need to carry around your mobile phone and iPod, we feel it’s time to consolidate our brands under a single, intuitive, easy to understand name. From now on, our company, our platform, our brand, will simply be known as Mapcreator. After all, we create maps.

Here is what our commercial lead, Christian Erades, had to say about the change: “The move to using the Mapcreator name for everything makes total sense; it says who we are and what we do. In one way it is back to basics, in another, it looks forward to a future of maps for anyone. This is also reflected in our new unified branding which will be unveiled in November.”

New tool

With the ‘new’ name, comes the new tool. It is not just a new version or release, the brand new Mapcreator tool has been built from the ground up using the latest Vue.js JavaScript framework. We have taken all the good stuff from the old tool, blitzed it up with some awesome new cutting-edge ingredients in the development team’s creative blender, and produced a new tool that is faster, easier to use, with a bucketload of advanced features.

Our technical lead, Robbert Klaver, explains: “From the outset, we designed the new tool to be simpler, more intuitive and able to render maps more quickly. Users can now create a map for several outputs in a fraction of the time. Our maps are built on vectors, meaning that they are much easier to rotate and pan. Mapcreator also uses artificial intelligence (AI) to help analyze inputs, resulting in functionality like creating and working with labels being handled in a much more dynamic and time-efficient way.”

The new tool uses a single map type, meaning that users are no longer required to select the type of map they want to create from the outset (removing the need to start again if you happen to select the wrong map type from the get-go). New functionality includes drag and drop, tilt and rotate (so much fun), 3D buildings (no way!) and a regularly updated library of featured maps (created by us) for our users to build upon e.g. all the stages of The Tour de France – very handy!

Robbert Klaver, again: “Mapcreator has been built using extensive customer feedback. With the new tool, what you see is what you get (WYSIWYG), so no unexpected surprises when outputting your maps. We have improved our data source too, deciding to move to OpenStreetMap. Finally, we are using the Mapcreator API, making it more secure than ever.”

The future is bright

Here at Mapcreator towers in Eindhoven, and through our regional representatives around the world, you will find that we are absolutely nuts about maps (did that we mention that already?). Our commitment to never standing still, to continually developing ourselves and our technologies, makes us a dependable mapping partner to all our customers.

Christian Erades, again: “I like to think of us as map fanatics. The release of the new tool shows our commitment to delivering the very best mapping solution in the market, and that Mapcreator is here for the long term. We are close to all our clients; we listen carefully to what they have to say and continually strive to improve what we do.”
